Abstract

One of the goals of mathematics education is for students to understand mathematical ideas.  However, in reality, class XI at SMA Negeri 1 IV Koto is still categorized as minimal in this regard.  This can be seen from the first test scores that do not indicate an understanding of mathematical ideas.  The discovery learning (DL) model is considered a potential solution to overcome this problem.  The research method used was a quasi-experimental design.  Nonequivalent posttest-only control group design was used in this research. XI and XI.F.2 and XI.F.3 classes at SMA Negeri 1 IV Koto became the research population.  A set of descriptive questions designed to calculate conceptual understanding of mathematical ideas served as the research instrument of choice.  Since the t-test obtained a P-value of 0.011 with α = 0.05, it is concluded that H0 is rejected.  SMA Negeri 1 IV Koto who used the DL model to explore mathematical concepts outperformed their counterparts who used the conventional model.
